Eldoret:Security in the North Rift region has markedly improved due to ongoing government operations targeting banditry and criminal activities, according to Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr. Abdi Hassan.
According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative, named Operation ‘Maliza Uhalifu,’ has made significant strides in restoring peace to previously volatile areas. This progress has allowed residents to return to their homes and businesses and resume normal economic activities ahead of the upcoming Mashujaa Day celebrations in Eldoret.
Dr. Hassan highlighted the government’s commitment to consolidating these gains through continued security operations, intelligence-led interventions, and enhanced collaboration between security agencies and local communities. A disarmament exercise has led to the recovery of over 2,000 illegal firearms, which is considered a crucial step in disabling armed groups.
The Regional Commissioner stated that security operations would persist in areas like the Turkwel Belt, Malaso and Suguta valleys, and the Mukogodo enclave to ensure effective control. He emphasized that those involved in banditry and other criminal activities would face targeted operations and legal consequences.
Dr. Hassan attributed the progress to coordinated efforts by the National Police Service, the Kenya Defence Forces, and other security teams, alongside cooperation from local leaders and communities. Peacebuilding initiatives, such as community dialogue meetings, are also being employed to address grievances and promote peaceful coexistence.
Further, security agencies have intensified intelligence-led operations against criminal networks in the wider Rift Valley region, including Nakuru City and Naivasha, to prevent the spread of criminal activities. Efforts are also underway to resolve inter-community disputes and prevent illegal occupation of protected areas like the Maasai Mau Forest.
As Eldoret prepares to host the national Mashujaa Day celebrations, Dr. Hassan urged political leaders, religious institutions, the media, and the public to promote peace and reject hate speech. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to maintaining security operations and ensuring that these efforts lead to lasting peace and prosperity in the region.
