Kisii: The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) has called for an all-inclusive, meaningful, and active participation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the forthcoming 2027 General Elections. Speaking during a courtesy call to the Kisii County Commissioner’s office in Kisii town, NGEC Vice Chairperson Thomas Koyier said the Commission had commenced dialogue in the county to encourage the women, youth, and PWDs to participate in the electoral processes and curb gender-based violence during the electioneering period.
According to Kenya News Agency, Koyier emphasized the importance of engaging county dialogues to ensure these groups are encouraged to participate in elections and to address the issue of gender-based violence during election time. He stated that the dialogue sessions will involve collecting views of all special interest groups on barriers affecting their participation in political and electoral processes.
The vice chairperson highlighted political violence as a major concern, particularly for women who are often targeted during elections. He assured that the Commission will collaborate with intergovernmental institutions to provide the necessary support to address gender-based violence among the special interest groups involved in the elections.
NGEC Commissioner Dr. Margaret Karungaru expressed concern over the low number of elected female leaders in Kisii County, pointing out the challenge this poses to achieving the Two-Thirds Gender Rule, a provision recognized by the Constitution. She stressed the need for more women to be included in decision-making roles.
Kisii County Commissioner, James Kamau, endorsed the dialogue initiative and reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering women and youth, as well as achieving gender parity.
