Ndagani: Traders in Ndagani, Tharaka Nithi County, are set to move into a newly constructed market as the county government seeks to improve the trading environment and address the risks associated with roadside businesses.
According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Muthomi Njuki stated that about 170 traders have been registered to operate from the facility, providing them with a designated space to sell their goods. Njuki emphasized that traders operating along roadsides must vacate these areas and relocate to the new market due to the safety risks posed to both traders and motorists.
The governor announced that traders would be given a deadline to move into the market. After this period, enforcement actions will be taken against those who continue to operate along the roads. “Once the deadline is given, those who will continue selling along the roads will have their kiosks removed,” Njuki warned. He highlighted that the County Government would not allow traders to operate in areas that could expose them to accidents and encouraged them to utilize the newly constructed facility.
Njuki also revealed that the market would include a daycare center, enabling traders with young children to manage their businesses without the challenge of childcare while serving customers. Furthermore, he expressed concerns over the increasing number of bars in Ndagani, especially given the presence of students in the area.
He announced that the County Government would regulate entertainment establishments to ensure they do not disrupt residents, traders, and university students. The governor warned bar owners against playing loud music, highlighting it as a nuisance to the surrounding community. Bars operating near learning institutions will be closed, and those that remain must comply with approved operating hours.
Njuki outlined that these measures aim to create a conducive environment for business and learning in Ndagani, which hosts a large student population. Additionally, the governor called on residents of the Mount Kenya region to embrace unity, stressing that greater cohesion is necessary for the region to effectively advance its interests. He urged leaders and residents to work together and speak with one voice on issues affecting the region.
