NCCK Urges Adequate Preparations Ahead Of 2027 Election

Nairobi: The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has called for accountability and institutional reforms ahead of next year’s General Election. The organization emphasized the importance of collaboration between leaders, institutions, and citizens to address social, economic, and governance challenges.

According to Kenya News Agency, Rev. Dr. Alphonse Kanga addressed delegates at a Nairobi Regional meeting held at YMCA Central Conference Hall. He stressed the need for the country to recommit to constitutional principles and public service ethics to strengthen national cohesion. He expressed concern that democratic ideals are being overshadowed by a political culture that prioritizes elite interests over public welfare.

Kanga highlighted the issue of rising political intolerance and incidents of violence linked to public engagements, calling for stronger enforcement of laws and increased civic education to support peaceful participation. He emphasized the importance of conducting political activities within the law and respecting human dignity and peaceful coexistence.

The reverend urged coordinated action by relevant institutions to prevent undermining national unity. He warned that failure to address hate speech and incitement could erode trust and weaken societal cohesion. Additionally, Kanga raised concerns over recurring flooding in urban areas, advocating for improved planning and investment in drainage systems.

Kanga stressed the need for transparency and efficiency in the Social Health Authority (SHA), emphasizing the importance of accountability in resource management for effective service delivery. He noted that health is a constitutional right and systems must ensure quality services for citizens.

Rising prices of basic commodities were also a focal point, as Kanga urged interventions to strengthen food security and support vulnerable populations. He highlighted the pressure on low-income households due to the increasing cost of essential goods.

Furthermore, Kanga called for continued reforms within the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), advocating for improvements in voter registration systems and institutional preparedness for future elections. He stressed the importance of transparent and credible electoral processes to maintain public confidence.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue, peacebuilding, and ethical leadership, stating its ongoing engagement with stakeholders to promote national unity and democratic governance.
