Murang’a Level 5 Hospital Expands with New Complex to Alleviate Congestion

Murang’a:Murang’a County Government has inaugurated a new Wards and Outpatient Complex at the Murang’a Level 5 Hospital. This major expansion aims to alleviate congestion, decrease waiting times, and enhance access to quality healthcare for residents.

According to Kenya News Agency, the new facility is designed to bolster the hospital’s capacity to manage the increasing patient numbers, offering improved conditions for both outpatient and inpatient services.

Governor Irungu Kang’ata, speaking at the official opening ceremony, highlighted the necessity of the expansion due to a significant rise in patient numbers. The hospital has seen daily outpatient attendance escalate from around 600 to between 1,500 and 2,000 over the past few years, placing a strain on the existing infrastructure. Consequently, the county government invested in this new facility to enhance service delivery.

The Governor explained that the hospital, originally built to accommodate approximately 200 inpatients, sometimes had to manage up to 500 patients, causing congestion in the wards. The new complex adds 25 beds, which are expected to alleviate this pressure and provide more dignified admission conditions for patients.

In addition to the new complex, the county has established additional dispensaries in areas near Murang’a town, including Mukuyu, Kiangage, and Muchungucha. This initiative aims to bring healthcare services closer to residents and reduce unnecessary referrals to the Level 5 facility.

Governor Kang’ata expressed optimism that the new complex will enhance patient flow, reduce queues, and enable medical staff to attend to patients more efficiently. This expansion is also part of a strategy to attract insured patients, such as teachers, county employees, and business people, to seek treatment at the public hospital rather than private facilities. Revenue from these patients will be reinvested in the hospital to purchase medical supplies and improve infrastructure, benefiting all patients.

The new facility will also provide opportunities for medical consultants to conduct private practice within the hospital, attracting and retaining specialists while improving access to specialized care. Kang’ata noted that having more specialists on-site would enhance response times during emergencies, improving patient care.

The project was initiated following requests from teachers seeking dedicated medical services. However, the facility remains open to the public. The opening of the complex is part of the county’s broader investment in healthcare infrastructure, medical equipment, and digital systems to strengthen public health facilities and meet the growing demand for medical services. Governor Kang’ata affirmed the county’s commitment to continue expanding and modernizing healthcare facilities to ensure residents receive quality medical services within the public health system.
