Nandi Hills:Nandi Hills MP Bernard Kitur has promised government protection for journalists as the nation approaches the election period, emphasizing the importance of enabling them to provide citizens with accurate information for making informed electoral decisions.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kitur, a member of the National Assembly Committee on Communication, Information, and Innovation, stated that the government will not tolerate any insecurity directed at journalists. He assured, “We will stand on behalf of the government to protect all journalists from those trying to create insecurity or any disturbances.”
During his visit to the Eldoret Media Hub, established by the Media Council of Kenya, Kitur praised journalists for their critical role in society. He highlighted their ability to advocate for marginalized voices, saying, “I am very happy by the extreme critical role you play; you are able to speak on behalf of widows whose properties have been taken, and by just one voice of reporting, most of them have regained their rightful share.”
Kitur also commended journalists and students on attachment at the hub for their efforts in informing citizens. He expressed satisfaction with the utilization of the facility by journalists from various media stations.
In addition, Kitur announced plans to report to Parliament to seek additional funding to address concerns raised by journalists at the hub. He also urged media house owners to maintain fairness in their reporting, warning that biased reporting could damage their reputations, and called for upholding fairness and integrity in journalism.
