Muhoroni: Muhoroni Member of Parliament James K’Oyoo has called for dialogue between Muhoroni Sugar Company and residents of Koguta to resolve a long-standing land dispute. Speaking after a confrontation between locals and the company’s management, K’Oyoo stated that part of the contested land, measuring over 4,000 acres, rightfully belongs to the Koguta community following a court ruling.
According to Kenya News Agency, K’Oyoo explained that before the current leasing arrangements, the land had been managed by receiver managers who were unaware that ownership had reverted to the local community. The MP highlighted that attempts to present the land as legally leased are misleading. ‘Some people are misinterpreting the situation by claiming the land was leased, yet it had already been returned to the Koguta people,’ he said.
K’Oyoo urged all parties to engage in constructive talks to prevent further tensions and ensure a peaceful resolution. He also dismissed reports that three people were recently killed in
the area in connection with the dispute.
