Mombasa Parents Urged to Educate Children

Mombasa: Changamwe Member of Parliament (MP) Omar Mwinyi has urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s academic progress and behaviour to contain cases of juvenile delinquency in the society. The legislator attributed the rise of juvenile gangs to idleness, irresponsible parenting, and school absenteeism.

According to Kenya News Agency, Mwinyi emphasized that engaging students fully in education would prevent them from engaging in such activities. He stated that education is the surest path out of these issues and a means to compete globally. He pointed out that gang activities thrive where education has been neglected, urging stakeholders to prioritize educational efforts to combat this trend.

The MP made these remarks during a day-long career talk at Magongo Stadium Hall, attended by Form Four students, parents, and teachers. The event featured a former pupil of Bomu Primary School, now an employee of the World Bank Group in the USA, who was once taught by Mwinyi. The MP highlighted her journey as an example of resilience and determination, urging students to emulate her success despite her humble beginnings.

Mwinyi stressed that success requires hard work, discipline, and consistency, not just wishful thinking. He advised learners that achieving their dreams demands preparation and perseverance, drawing lessons from the World Bank employee’s life story.

Sophie Rabuku, the Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Human Resources at the World Bank Group, shared her inspiring journey from working at a petrol station to her current role. Her story of determination, despite scoring a C in KCSE, underscored the value of resilience and self-belief in advancing one’s career. Rabuku encouraged students not to give up, emphasizing the importance of hard work and self-belief.

Mohammed Nalasa, a teacher at St Charles Lwanga Secondary School, praised the MP’s initiative, noting that it provided learners with motivation and highlighted the importance of striving and working hard despite challenges.
