Meru: Leaders from Meru County have expressed strong support for the national government’s intensified crackdown on banditry in the northern grazing zone, describing the operation as a necessary and decisive measure to restore peace and stability in the region. Speaking at Kaelo Technical College on Sunday, Igembe North MP Julius Taitumu lauded the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, noting that residents have endured years of insecurity marked by livestock theft, displacement, and fear.
According to Kenya News Agency, the event was attended by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Principal Secretary for Blue Economy and Fisheries Betsy Njagi, and Migori Woman Representative Fatuma Mohammed. They reaffirmed the Kenya Kwanza administration’s dedication to ending banditry and accelerating development in affected areas. Ichung’wah assured residents that security operations have been strengthened and will continue until lasting peace is achieved. He highlighted the success of similar interventions in Baringo County and expressed confidence that Meru will soon experience the same transformation.
Meru Woman Representative Karambu Kailemia urged leaders and residents to support security agencies and avoid politicizing security matters. She emphasized that the operation targets criminals and warned that leaders who incite communities or frustrate peace efforts risk facing legal consequences.
Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia echoed the sentiments during a church service in Igembe Central, affirming his administration’s close collaboration with the national government. He strongly condemned cattle rustling and violence, warning that criminal elements will face the full force of the law.
Njia Ward MCA Mwenda Ali welcomed the operation, noting that comprehensive security measures across affected areas will help recover stolen livestock and dismantle criminal networks.
Leaders highlighted that improved security will unlock economic potential in the region, paving the way for investment, trade, and development projects under the Kenya Kwanza agenda. Residents were urged to cooperate fully with security agencies while heeding the warning against attempts to derail peace initiatives. The leaders expressed confidence that the government’s firm and coordinated approach will bring an end to banditry and usher in a new era of peace, unity, and prosperity in Meru County.
