Mathioya Schools Receive Laptops to Boost Digital Literacy

Mathioya: Secondary schools in Mathioya Sub-county have received a major boost following the distribution of laptops, books, and revision materials, aimed at enhancing digital literacy and supporting learning under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework. The initiative, which targets all secondary schools in the area, will see a total of 300 laptops distributed within the next four to five months.

According to Kenya News Agency, during the issuance of the laptops at Karunge Secondary School, parliamentary aspirant Kenneth Kabue Kihunyo emphasized that the program is designed to equip learners with essential digital skills needed in today’s job market. “As students transition to tertiary institutions, our aim is to build their digital literacy, so they can learn emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, engage in online marketing and even earn income beyond conventional methods,” he stated.

Kihunyo further explained that strengthening computer laboratories will not only enhance learning
but also expose students to global opportunities. “By equipping computer labs and building on existing resources, we are creating avenues for talent development. Learners will be able to search for jobs and tap into digital opportunities available worldwide,” he noted. He added that enhancing digital skills among learners will position them to compete effectively in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Karunge Secondary School Principal Richard Wainaina remarked that the initiative comes at a crucial time when ICT is a key component of the CBE curriculum. “With the Competency-Based Education system, a well-equipped computer lab is essential for learners, especially those pursuing information technology. We already have 24 units, and with this addition, we will have close to 30, which will greatly improve access,” he said. He praised the initiative, noting that it will enhance both teaching and learning outcomes.

Parents also welcomed the program, expressing optimism that it will improve academic perform
ance and prepare students for the future. Form Four class representative Magdaline Mueni expressed appreciation for the support. “We are happy that our children have received laptops and revision materials. This will greatly support their studies and improve their performance,” she said. Mueni added that the distribution of avocado seedlings alongside learning materials will further empower families economically. “The seedlings will help us as parents generate income in the future, which contributes to building a more empowered society,” she noted.
