Nairobi:The County Government of Marsabit, in collaboration with the Safaricom Foundation, has unveiled three state-of-the-art vocational training workshops at the Saku Vocational Training Centre. This Sh20 million project represents a significant step towards enhancing technical and vocational education for the youth in the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative includes a Welding and Fabrication Workshop, a Motor Vehicle Mechanics Workshop, and a Catering and Hospitality Training Unit, all equipped with modern facilities. These workshops aim to provide practical and industry-relevant skills to young individuals, boosting their employability and potential for entrepreneurship.
During the commissioning ceremony, Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali highlighted the County’s dedication to empowering youth through quality education and skill development. He emphasized the government’s commitment to removing financial barriers by offering scholarships and free training in County vocational institutions, ensuring broader access to technical education.
Governor Ali praised the Safaricom Foundation’s Wezesha Vijana Programme, which has significantly impacted youth in Marsabit. Under this program, 213 young people have received vocational scholarships and skills training, with nearly 90 percent obtaining nationally recognized qualifications. Many graduates have either found employment or successfully started their own businesses.
Furthermore, the Governor announced the Third Phase of the Wezesha Vijana Programme, which aims to benefit an additional 130 young people from various sub-counties, including North Horr, Laisamis, Saku, and Moyale. He also noted the growing enrollment at the Saku Vocational Training Centre, which currently accommodates 576 trainees.
Safaricom Foundation Chairperson Joseph Ogutu reiterated the Foundation’s commitment to youth empowerment through partnerships with County governments. He noted that the Foundation has invested nearly Sh500 million in Marsabit since 2003, with education as a key focus area. Ogutu emphasized the importance of equipping young people with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
Caroline Kahiga, Safaricom Foundation Country Manager for Corporate Social Responsibility, emphasized the centrality of investing in young people to the Foundation’s mission. She advocated for expanding vocational training opportunities to remote areas to ensure equitable access to quality education across the County.
The launch of these workshops marks a significant milestone in the Wezesha Vijana Programme, underscoring the collaborative efforts of the County Government of Marsabit and the Safaricom Foundation to enhance vocational education, promote youth employment, and support entrepreneurship. The modern facilities are expected to equip hundreds of young individuals with essential skills, driving economic growth and improving livelihoods in Marsabit County.
