Yare:The Maralal International Camel Derby, a key cultural and sporting event, has been postponed, affecting small business operators, camel racers, traditional house builders, and residents of Yare village.
According to Kenya News Agency, the derby, initially scheduled from September 24 to 27, 2026, will now occur from October 22 to 25. This last-minute change disrupted the preparations and business plans of local residents, who had already invested time and resources in anticipation of the event.
The derby is a flagship cultural and tourism event in Samburu County, drawing participants and spectators from various regions. It provides significant economic opportunities for Yare village residents, where the event takes place. Women constructing traditional Samburu houses, known as Manyatta, for cultural exhibitions are among those impacted. Nailipu Lekerde, involved in this work, expressed disappointment over the postponement and urged the Samburu County Government to increase the women’s daily allowance to Sh1,000, highlighting their role in preserving Samburu culture.
Camel racers also faced challenges, having spent months preparing and arranging care for their animals. Racer Loibelu Lewarani noted the postponement forces them to adapt their plans, particularly during the current dry season, necessitating the search for pasture and water for their camels. Some racers may need to relocate their animals to Marsabit and Kirimon until the derby occurs.
Local traders and accommodation providers anticipated increased business during the event, with many already transporting goods and preparing facilities for visitors. However, the postponement has led to potential losses and uncertainty.
The Samburu County Government, through a statement by the Governor’s Press Service, cited scheduling conflicts involving the chief guest of honour and international participants as the reasons for rescheduling the derby.
