Wote: Residents and stakeholders in Makueni County have expressed their views on four key economic bills during a public participation forum organized by the National Assembly in Wote Town.
According to Kenya News Agency, the meeting was headed by Kesses Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Julius Rutto at the Wote Social Hall in Wote town in Makueni Subcounty. Participants provided input on the Finance Bill 2026, the Sovereign Wealth Fund Bill, the Central Bank (Amendment) Bill 2026, and the Kenya Revenue Bill 2026, which aim to strengthen fiscal management, financial oversight, and revenue administration in the country.
Concerns were raised about the management and protection of public funds, with calls for transparency and accountability in the implementation of the proposed measures to safeguard resources for improving the welfare of Kenyans. Youth Representative Jeffrey Mutuku highlighted issues with taxes imposed on mineral exploration and petroleum products, advocating for mechanisms that ensure proceeds benefit both current and future generations.
Benson Mumo, a representative of the Creative Industry, pointed out that high taxes on betting, trade winnings, and content creation hinder daily earnings, urging the government to exempt these areas from taxation. MP Julius Rutto explained that the Finance Bill 2026 aims to generate an additional Sh117 billion to support infrastructure projects and development programs, while also reorganizing revenue-raising measures and streamlining existing laws.
The MP praised the youth for participating in public discussions and stressed the importance of engaging in governance to promote development. He also advised young people to seek accurate information and avoid misinformation on social media, which he claimed impedes the country’s progress.
