Makueni: The County Government of Makueni, through its Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Public Works, Housing, and Energy, has earmarked Sh17 million for the construction of a mini bridge at Muangini drift in Mukaa Subcounty. This initiative aims to enhance transportation in the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, the construction project on the Muangini-Mbyani-Ngalani road is expected to improve connectivity in rural areas that typically become inaccessible during the rainy season, thereby fostering economic growth. County Executive Committee Member for Infrastructure, Transport, Public Works, Housing, and Energy, Eng. Peter Mumo, stated during an inspection that the project is anticipated to take about four months to complete.
Eng. Mumo explained that the project involves building a 3-cell box culvert with a 5×2.5m opening to upgrade the Muangini Drift. This upgrade is designed to enhance safety and facilitate movement for residents, traders, farmers, school children, and emergency services, ensuring access along the flood-prone section during the rainy season.
Mumo further disclosed that Stafford Construction Company Limited has been awarded the contract for the project and is expected to complete the work within the stipulated timeframe. The construction of the Muangini drift is projected to significantly improve transportation to markets and schools, particularly during the examination period when exam papers are delivered to schools amid rainy conditions.
Additionally, the project is expected to benefit farmers, allowing them to transport their produce to local markets more efficiently, reducing losses and potentially increasing profits, thereby contributing to poverty alleviation in the region.
