Makueni County Allocates Sh160 Million for Economic Empowerment of Special Groups

Makueni: The County Government of Makueni, through its Department of Gender and Social Services, has allocated Sh160 million under the Makueni County Empowerment Fund (MCEF) to support women, youth, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). This initiative aims to empower these groups economically and enhance their livelihoods.

According to Kenya News Agency, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Gender, Eng. Sabastian Kyoni, announced the initiative at a public Engagement Forum for Anti-GBV Champions at the Makueni Integrated Vocational and Education Center (MIVEC). Eng. Kyoni emphasized that the funds will be distributed through organized groups, enabling beneficiaries to start or expand income-generating activities and achieve self-reliance, thus addressing the poverty affecting many residents.

Eng. Kyoni also highlighted the requirement for applicants to clear any existing debts from previous funds such as Hustler or Tetheka before applying for new loans, which will be accessible digitally via mobile phones. He stated, “The county government has established a fund of Sh160 million to give loans to women, youths, and persons with disabilities to enable them to improve their livelihoods through economic empowerment.”

Further, Kyoni disclosed that Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr has appointed an additional Chief Officer (CO) to the department of Gender, Youth, Sports and Social Services to enhance service delivery and boost efficiency. “The appointment splits the department’s leadership responsibilities between two chief officers, allowing better coordination and implementation of programmes targeting gender equality, youth, sports, and social protection across the county,” Kyoni explained.

Additionally, Kyoni mentioned that the Governor has instructed another round of Huduma Mashinani to be conducted in each ward to register residents who missed the previous exercise. The county will also offer marriage registration services to couples seeking official registration during this outreach programme.
