Machakos County Boosts Dairy and Cooperative Sector with New Investments

Masii:Dairy farmers in Mwala Sub-County have received significant support from the County Government of Machakos, which has provided milk pasteurization and packaging machines to the Masii Dairy Cooperative. This initiative aims to enhance value addition and improve market access for the farmers.

According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Wavinya Ndeti announced that the county has invested Sh10 million to facilitate the acquisition of the equipment and issued an additional Sh370,000 cheque to automate the cooperative’s operations. She expressed that these resources will enable the cooperative to efficiently bulk, store, package, and transport milk, reaching distant markets such as Nairobi, while reducing wastage and increasing farmer earnings.

In Wamunyu Ward, Governor Ndeti further supported local initiatives by giving a Sh819,000 cheque to the Wamunyu Cooperative Society to enhance its operations. She also pledged to provide chicks and fish fingerlings to boost poultry and fish farming among the cooperative members.

The support initiatives occur amid a nationwide milk supply shortage and are expected to help mitigate wastage and improve returns for farmers.

During a development tour of Wamunyu, the Governor, accompanied by Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi, inaugurated a new Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) classroom at Yathui Primary. She highlighted the county’s commitment to early learning through initiatives like daily feeding programs, the Maziwa ya Mama programme, and the provision of learning materials and child-friendly furniture, which have increased ECDE enrollment from about 32,000 to over 42,000 learners.

Additionally, the Governor launched the opening and grading of the Kaitha-Kambiti Road through Kambiti Primary, which will link Kaitha Sublocation to nearby areas, enhancing access to schools, markets, and health facilities. Governor Ndeti emphasized the importance of development reaching every household, as investments in education, cooperatives, and roads lay a strong foundation for improved livelihoods.

Deputy Governor Mwangangi reaffirmed the county administration’s commitment to delivering projects that address the immediate needs of residents.
