Leaders Offer Condolences to Nyando MP Following Mother’s Passing

Nairobi: Political leaders in the Nyanza region, led by Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, have expressed their condolences to Nyando MP Jared Okello following the passing of his mother, Mama Doris Okello. Mama Doris, who was regarded as the family matriarch, passed away after a brief illness on the night of Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

According to Kenya News Agency, CS Wandayi extended his sympathies to the legislator and his family, describing the late Mama Doris as a person of remarkable generosity and humility. He reflected on his personal interactions with her, highlighting their impact and inspiration. “I had the privilege to interact with Mama Doris and felt her generosity and humility. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her,” Wandayi stated.

Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o noted the loss as a deeply sorrowful moment for the entire Nyando Sub-county, emphasizing that it marked the departure of a source of love, wisdom, identity, and unwavering support. Meanwhile, the ODM National Chairperson and Homabay County Governor, Gladys Wanga, remembered Mama Doris as a longtime family friend and a special person in her life. She praised Mama Doris’ commitment to the church, particularly the Othoo SDA, and her life of service, faith, and humility.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Owili referred to Mama Doris as a true pillar and guiding light for her family, mentioning that her passing has left an irreplaceable void. He acknowledged her strong faith and service to others within the Seventh-day Adventist Church community. Similarly, James Koyoo from Muhoroni Constituency highlighted her legacy as a wise and resilient matriarch whose nurturing spirit inspired the community.

Speaker of the Kisumu County Assembly Elisha Oraro also paid tribute, emphasizing that through Mama Doris’ passing, Nyando Sub County has lost a true pillar. He described her as a loving mother not only to her immediate family but also to the broader community. “She was a source of wisdom, kindness, and strength to many beyond her home,” Speaker Oraro eulogized.
