Some Lugari Constituency leaders have agreed to join efforts in order to uplift deteriorating standards of education in the area.
Led by Lugari Deputy County Commissioner Moses Gicharu, they called on all education stakeholders in the Sub-County to work together so to improve the performance of local schools in national examinations.
The DCC pleaded with the locals to ensure their children go to school saying the government had subsidized the cost of education to manageable levels.
“I tell you that education remains the most reliable transferrable asset from a parent to their children, unlike assets like vehicles or houses which are temporally,” the DCC said during the celebrations to mark Mashujaa Day at Mlimani Primary School Sports Ground in Mautuma Location.
Gicharu warned parents who fail to pay school fees even in government day schools yet some of them were government employed public officers. “The government will take action against parents who ignore to support their children in school yet they are capable,” he threatened.
The DCC however urged local leadership which includes elected leaders, County Government, National Government line departments and agencies to lead way on improving education in the Sub-County.
Gicharu promised that his office will provide all necessary support including conducting regular public barazas on changing declining standards of education.
“It is worrying that our constituency is leading in Kakamega County when it comes to children who drop out of school every year. Personally I assure you that we will do whatever it takes to ensure that this sad image is changed,” the DCC assured.
Addressing the same function, area Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera confirmed that he has organised for constituency education stakeholders meeting to discuss ways of reclaiming the fallen standards of education.
“My number one agenda is education, number two is education and number three is education. This where our strength sits and we must reach there,” he said.
Through Constituency Development Fund, Nabwera assured the locals that there will be no school with mud constructed structures in the next few years.
The law maker however pleaded with National and County Government administrative units to question resources enabled parents who stubbornly refuse to pay their children fees.
The DCC and the MP were reacting to continuous declining education standards with reports indicating that Lugari schools did not produce even a single straight ‘A’ student in the last Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education results.
Mashujaa Day celebrations at Mautuma was also attended by area Member of County Assembly Charles Anyona, National and County Governments officers among other local leaders.
