Laikipia Forms Taskforce to Enhance Peace During Festivities

Nairobi: Authorities in Laikipia County have established a multi-agency forum to tackle rising insecurity ahead of the festive season. The committee, comprising community members, security officials, and business stakeholders, aims to curb crimes such as mugging, narcotics use, female genital mutilation (FGM), teenage pregnancies, early marriages, and urban robberies.

According to Kenya News Agency, Onesmus Kyatha, Laikipia County Commissioner, has stated, “We have realised that there are many gaps, and we want to ensure they are mainstreamed for sustained peace and security in the county.” The forum, formed on Wednesday this week, is designed to promote sustained peace across the county through coordinated efforts.

Dr. Helen Gathogo, Director of the One More Day Children Rescue Centre, noted that crime rates typically spike during holidays. She highlighted the rise in teen pregnancies and narcotics use during Christmas, emphasizing that the situation needs to be managed before escalating into other crises. “It’s a critical season,” she said.

The initiative urges parents to remain vigilant and protect their children from falling victim to criminal activities during this period. Additionally, residents are encouraged to volunteer information that could aid in boosting security in the county.
