Kwale: The Kwale county government has taken a significant step towards improving waste management by procuring two high-capacity skip trucks and skip bins to serve the municipalities of Kwale, Diani, Kinango, and Lungalunga.

According to Kenya News Agency, the county government’s Department of Environment, Urban Planning, and Natural Resources facilitated the purchase of these skip loaders to address waste management challenges in the region. The initiative aims to create a cleaner business environment for investors and boost the tourism sector.

Governor Fatuma Achani, speaking at the launch of the refuse trucks, emphasized the importance of the new equipment in managing solid waste. She highlighted that the skip loaders would enhance sanitation and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, investors, and tourists. Achani noted that the trucks, equipped with modern features, would supplement existing equipment, improving operational efficiency and waste collection capacity in the municipalities.

The governor stressed that the initiative is part of a broader effort to upgrade Kwale’s waste management infrastructure, promoting cleaner and healthier communities across the four municipalities. Achani stated that a clean environment is crucial for preventing diseases, boosting tourism, and fostering economic growth. She urged municipality managers to maintain cleanliness in the towns.

Addressing the challenges posed by population growth and rapid urbanization, Achani reiterated that the initiative would not only improve cleanliness but also enhance the overall health and well-being of residents. She assured the county’s residents of ongoing efforts to establish a new municipality in Samburu Sub-County, which is experiencing rapid development.

During the event, Achani was accompanied by Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo, County Secretary Sylvia Chidodo, and various County Executive Committee Members. She also highlighted other achievements, such as the installation of street and floodlights, construction of cabro roads, and building of ablution blocks to enhance sanitation.

Kinango Municipality Board Chairman, Moses Dzivo, expressed gratitude to the county government for addressing the pressing issue of waste management. He acknowledged that solid waste management had been a major concern raised by residents during public consultations. Dzivo urged residents to practice proper waste disposal and cooperate with the initiative to resolve logistical challenges that previously hindered clean-up activities and sanitation services.

Dzivo further mentioned the intensified public awareness campaigns on solid waste management within Kinango municipality. He encouraged residents to utilize designated garbage collection points to facilitate the disposal process as the county continues to implement additional waste management measures.
