Migori: Residents working under the ongoing Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) urban roads maintenance project in Migori Town have expressed satisfaction with the initiative, citing job creation, timely payment of wages, and improved urban infrastructure.
According to Kenya News Agency, the project, which focuses on road maintenance and environmental cleanliness within Migori Town, has provided employment opportunities to local residents while enhancing the condition of urban roads and drainage systems. Beneficiaries say the initiative has enabled them to earn a stable income amid limited job opportunities in the region, helping them meet daily needs and support their families.
One of the workers, John Otieno from Suna East Sub-County, said the programme has significantly improved his livelihood. “I am able to earn a living from this work. Unlike some projects where workers experience delays in payment, KURA pays on time,” said Otieno. He noted that timely remuneration has improved financial stability among workers involved in the project, many of whom rely on it as their primary source of income.
Otieno further commended the recruitment process, describing it as fair, transparent, and free from discrimination. He said all applicants are given equal opportunity to participate in the programme. “There is no favouritism. Those who apply are genuinely given an opportunity to work. Everyone is treated equally during recruitment,” he added.
According to Joab Omondi, a supervisor overseeing the ongoing maintenance works, KURA’s mandate extends beyond road construction to include ensuring that urban roads remain clean, accessible, and safe for all users. He explained that the project incorporates routine cleaning of roads, clearing of drainage systems, and maintenance activities aimed at improving mobility within Migori Town. “KURA mainly deals with urban roads, and part of the work involves ensuring that the roads and their surroundings are kept clean and in good condition,” said Omondi.
The initiative has also been welcomed by local traders and businesses, who depend on efficient road networks for transportation of goods and customer access. Improved infrastructure is expected to reduce travel time, ease congestion, and boost economic activity within the town.
