Homa bay: The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Homa Bay County branch, has assured teachers of a peaceful, free, and fair election ahead of the county polls scheduled for Sunday. Speaking during a reconnaissance visit to Tom Mboya University, the County Executive Secretary, Steven Yogo, emphasized the union’s commitment to ensuring all logistical and security arrangements are in place.
According to Kenya News Agency, Yogo noted that the union had conducted a consultative meeting with all 37 candidates, during which they unanimously agreed to maintain peace throughout the electoral process. He stressed the importance of a peaceful election and urged all candidates and their supporters to engage in dialogue and peaceful engagement.
Yogo further reiterated that every teacher has a democratic right to vote freely and assured the union’s dedication to protecting those rights. He also announced that the university management had approved the use of its facilities for the election, following a meeting with University Vice Chancellor Prof. Charles Ocholla. The facility has set guidelines to enhance order and security, including voter verification at the gate.
Yogo appealed to teachers to re-elect him, citing his track record and outlining key agenda items for the union, such as improving teachers’ welfare, reviewing the existing CBA, and plans to establish a KUPPET Plaza in Homa Bay.
Ben Ogwop, a candidate for the KUPPET Homa Bay County Chairperson position, highlighted the importance of addressing pre-election requirements to ensure a smooth voting process. He urged KUPPET members to participate actively in the election to ensure the union remains under the control of its members.
Both leaders assured teachers of adequate security measures to prevent chaos and called on candidates to avoid actions that could incite violence. Yogo concluded by promising a peaceful, transparent, and credible election, ensuring fair treatment for all candidates.
