Bomet: KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu has issued an appeal to teachers, urging them to use social media platforms responsibly while advising the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) not to impose overly restrictive measures. Oyuu’s comments came in response to a recent circular from TSC that warned teachers against misusing social media, which he described as a blanket condemnation of the teaching profession.
According to Kenya News Agency, the circular has sparked a debate among educators and union representatives, who voiced their concerns during a Persons with Disability inclusion event at Bomet Green stadium. The circular was perceived as an attempt to suppress teachers’ freedom of expression, prompting Oyuu to call for its review by TSC CEO Everlyne Mitei. He argued that the directive could be misused by TSC officials to target teachers unfairly, unless it is revised to more clearly define its scope.
Oyuu emphasized the significant role social media plays in communication, research, and commerce, highlighting its importance in personal and national development. However, he cautioned that irresponsible use could harm society and damage professional reputations. He advocated for accountability based on existing codes of conduct, rather than broad restrictions that might infringe on constitutional rights.
The circular, which was shared with the Kenya News Agency, specifically addresses unprofessional behavior on social media, such as cyberbullying and the dissemination of offensive content. It outlines that teachers engaging in such conduct will face disciplinary measures in line with the Teachers Service Commission Act and other relevant regulations. Despite this, Oyuu remains concerned that the directive could be misapplied without careful amendments to protect teachers’ rights.
