Kitui:Residents are being urged by Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe and County Commissioner Erastus Mbui to take proactive measures in anticipation of the upcoming El Ni±o rains. The officials stress the importance of early household preparedness and caution against residing near natural waterways.
According to Kenya News Agency, during a media briefing in Kitui town, both leaders emphasized the need for households to reinforce their dwellings to withstand the expected heavy downpours and strong winds. They warned against living in areas prone to flooding such as riverbanks and low-lying zones.
Dr. Malombe highlighted the severe risks posed by swollen rivers, including the potential for fast-moving floodwaters to cause extensive damage. He advised residents to stay vigilant, relocate from high-risk areas, and follow local safety advisories throughout the rainy season.
Authorities from Kitui County and the national government are closely monitoring weather conditions and coordinating disaster response efforts to support vulnerable communities. The anticipated El Ni±o rains, expected to continue into January 2027, could lead to floods, landslides, and other hazards.
Although the rains may boost water availability and agriculture, they could also threaten infrastructure and essential services. Farmers are encouraged to prepare by using certified seeds, observing planting windows, and adopting conservation measures.
Residents are advised to avoid crossing flooded areas, and parents are urged to keep children away from water hazards. The community is also warned against seeking shelter under trees during storms and is encouraged to drink treated water to prevent waterborne diseases.
Additionally, livestock should be sheltered appropriately, and important documents and supplies should be secured. Residents are reminded of the importance of preparedness and are urged to work together to protect lives and livelihoods.
The county and national governments have activated disaster management structures, increased the dissemination of early warnings, and launched public awareness campaigns. In emergencies, residents can contact the Kitui County Emergency Line or the Kenya Red Cross.
