Students from Magare Primary School in Homa Bay town were among beneficiaries of Kisumu Youth Football Association (KYFA) programme aimed at eradicating open defecation in the County.
KYFA in collaboration with UNICEF, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education commemorated World Menstrual hygiene Day by touring 30 schools; 11 within Homa Bay town Sub- County as well 19 schools in Rangwe Sub- County.
KYFA together with UNICEF seek to promote hygiene in schools by building ablution blocks.
Led by their officials, the Association distributed sanitary towels to students and enlightened them on issues pertaining to menstruation.
Schools in Rangwe and Homa Bay town Sub-counties have been rated last in terms of hygiene when compared to those in other Sub counties within the County.
Speaking to KNA, KYFA Director, Kevin Obware, said it is important for the various ministries within the County to pool funds to ensure they are able to provide sanitation facilities to every school within the County.
Paul Onduto, Magare Primary School Head Teacher, said the programme has been a great contribution towards ensuring school attendance of girls in the region and improving the overall performance.
“Girls who are of age were initially unable to attend classes during their menstruation periods,” said Onduto.
The Head Teacher urged parents to be supportive to their daughters who have come of age by providing them with hygiene products such as soaps and sanitary towels.
