Kisumu:The city is poised to benefit significantly from the 2026 Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) African Road Cycling Championships, which will take place from October 21 to 25. As 32 African countries gather for this prestigious event, Kisumu anticipates a boost in tourism and business activities.
According to Kenya News Agency, the event is expected to draw about 1,000 participants, including cyclists, team officials, and supporters. Christophe Impend, representing the Belgian-based organizer Golazo, highlighted the potential economic impact, citing the success of the previous championships held in Kwale County. Golazo is renowned for organizing major sports events globally and plans to bring similar benefits to Kisumu.
The championships will feature a variety of races, with competitors vying for continental titles and Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) points, which are crucial for Olympic qualification. Notable cycling nations such as Eritrea, Morocco, Egypt, and South Africa will participate, with events including individual time trials, mixed team relays, and elite road races.
Television coverage will broadcast the final competitions live, reaching audiences across Africa and beyond. Local broadcasters NTV and KBC, along with SuperSport, have secured rights to air the event. European broadcasters are also preparing documentaries for future viewing.
Kisumu County officials, including Farida Salim, are optimistic about the city’s ability to host large-scale international events, building on its experience from the Africities Summit in 2022. Efforts are underway to ensure visitor safety and smooth logistics during the championships, with collaboration from local security agencies and the Tourist Traffic Commandant.
The event will also feature a community cycling activity to promote public engagement and raise awareness of cycling as a sport. Organizers are coordinating with local authorities to manage transport and security, with temporary road closures planned to ensure the safety of participants and spectators.
Preparations for the championships have been extensive, involving consultations with various stakeholders. Media coverage will be supported by daily highlights and photographs, with journalists required to obtain accreditation for access to controlled zones.
The championships will conclude with daily medal ceremonies, recognizing the achievements of the top competitors. Defending champions Merhawi Kudus from Eritrea and Hailey Preen from South Africa are expected to compete, adding to the event’s excitement and prestige.
