Kisumu:Kisumu County is advancing its tourism sector as a key economic driver through the Kisumu Tourism Fiesta, aiming to draw visitors, investment, and business opportunities.
According to Kenya News Agency, Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Owili emphasized the county’s potential as a major tourism destination due to its strategic location on Lake Victoria, cultural heritage, and hospitality growth. The county is positioning tourism as a development pillar to create jobs, stimulate investment, and preserve culture.
The week-long Kisumu Tourism Fiesta, launched at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Complex, will highlight the county’s culture and tourism potential. Dr. Owili noted efforts to establish Kisumu as a premier lake tourism destination, a blue economy hub, and a center for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE).
Infrastructure improvements in transport, urban renewal, and hospitality are underway to enhance Kisumu’s competitiveness. The county will host the seventh County Assemblies Sports Association (CASA) Games next month, with over 10,000 participants expected.
Security measures are in place for the Tourism Fiesta, ensuring a safe environment for tourists and visitors. A partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) will also support women in tourism development.
The county has invested in the creative economy, with a new music recording studio at the Mama Grace Onyango Social Centre to support local artists. County Executive Committee Member Farida Salim announced the fiesta’s alignment with the theme ‘Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,’ featuring events like a youth symposium and motorsport tourism.
The Kenya Wildlife Service is working with the county to diversify tourism products at Ndere Island National Park and Impala Sanctuary. The Tourism Regulatory Authority will promote quality in tourism services during the fiesta, aiding local facilities in meeting standards and expanding market reach.
The Kisumu Tourism Fiesta gathers government agencies, stakeholders, and partners to showcase the county’s offerings, strengthening its position within the Lake Victoria tourism circuit. Key attractions include Dunga Wetlands, Ndere Island National Park, and Lake Victoria.
Tourism data indicates growth in Kenya’s sector, with revenue reaching Sh500 billion in 2025 and international arrivals up by 6.2 percent. Kisumu’s tourism attractions span wildlife, culture, and nature, with emerging sites offering ecotourism and cultural experiences. The fiesta coincides with the global celebration of World Tourism Day on September 27.
