Kisumu: Kirinyaga County Commissioner (CC), Hussein Allasow, has issued a warning to motorists to exercise caution on roads to prevent accidents during the festive season. He also announced strict measures against traders dealing in counterfeit liquor and illicit brews, emphasizing the government’s dedication to public safety and well-being.
According to Kenya News Agency, the County Commissioner delivered his message during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Wang’uru Girls Senior School in Mwea Constituency. Allasow highlighted the twin issues of reckless driving and illegal alcohol sales as significant concerns needing urgent attention. He expressed alarm over the increasing incidents of overspeeding along the Meru-Nairobi Highway, which traverses Kirinyaga County and has become a hotspot for accidents, often involving miraa transporters and other hurried drivers.
The Commissioner stressed that economic pursuits should not jeopardize lives, urging strict adherence to traffic laws. To combat these dangers, he directed traffic police and security agencies to enhance enforcement on the Meru-Nairobi Highway and other critical routes in the county. Offending drivers will face arrests and prosecution for infractions such as speeding, careless overtaking, and operating unroadworthy vehicles.
Turning to the issue of illicit alcohol, Allasow issued a stern warning to those involved in the illegal trade, highlighting its detrimental effects on families and communities, including health risks and deaths. He reported a decline in the presence of illicit brews in Kirinyaga due to rigorous crackdowns by authorities, vowing to sustain these efforts to prevent a resurgence of illegal alcohol.
The County Commissioner reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards those risking public health for personal profit. He called for community cooperation in eradicating the illegal alcohol trade, urging residents to collaborate with local leaders and security personnel by providing valuable information.
Allasow’s address also included a call to action for parents, religious leaders, and community elders to steer youth away from substance abuse, emphasizing the importance of family values and community support in addressing social issues. Leaders present at the celebrations supported the Commissioner’s call for road discipline and collective action against illicit brews, urging residents to engage in legitimate economic activities and back government safety and health initiatives.
As the Jamhuri Day celebrations concluded, Allasow reminded the attendees that independence entails responsibility. He encouraged the residents to uphold the law, foster peaceful co-existence, and contribute to the safety and prosperity of Kirinyaga County.
