Nairobi: The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has announced the launch of the distributed renewable energy and clean cooking Project Preparation Facility

Vihiga: Construction of the Sh900 million Kidundu Stadium in Vihiga County is on course following the successful completion of land compensation for all affected families. Vihiga Governor Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo announced that the 10,000-seater stadium is set to transform the county’s sports sector and boost socio-economic development.

According to Kenya News Agency, the project, which covers 15.6 acres, is being executed under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces to ensure quality standards and efficient delivery. As of April 20, 2026, all nineteen affected families had been fully compensated, with the total compensation amounting to Sh128 million. The County Government of Vihiga contributed Sh29.5 million, while the National Government, through the Ministry of Lands and the Land Settlement Fund Board of Trustees, provided Sh98.5 million.

Governor Ottichilo emphasized that the completion of the compensation process has paved the way for the smooth implementation of the stadium project. He highlighted that, once completed, the stadium will offer a modern venue for sports and community events, attract local and national competitions, and promote sports tourism in the region. Additionally, the facility is expected to create employment opportunities and stimulate growth in the hospitality sector.

Ottichilo expressed gratitude to President Dr. William Samoei Ruto for supporting the compensation process, as well as to Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome and Principal Secretary Nixon Korir for their roles in implementing the program. He also acknowledged the support of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Vihiga Constituency Member of Parliament Ernest Kagesi, and other local leaders. The governor further applauded the affected landowners for their cooperation in facilitating the project.

During the event, Vihiga County Commissioner Peter Mwangi Maina expressed satisfaction that Kidundu residents had been fully compensated despite challenges during the process. Maina praised the strong cooperation between the county and national governments and thanked the residents of Kidundu for their patience and support throughout the exercise.

Kidundu Residents Chairman Duncan Adesa also expressed appreciation to fellow residents for willingly surrendering their ancestral land for the stadium’s construction. “It has been a long journey since last year. We have cooperated with both the county and national governments, and we are grateful to the Governor and his team for their support and compensation to our people,” said Adesa.

The event was attended by government officials from the Vihiga County Government, the National Government, and representatives of the affected families. Kidundu Stadium is expected to be completed by October 2026 and is anticipated to serve as a major sports and social hub in Vihiga County.
