Kiambu Launches Mazingira Week to Boost Environmental Conservation

Kiambu:A collaborative effort led by Kiambu County officials and environmental partners has launched Mazingira Week to enhance public awareness and involvement in environmental conservation and the protection of natural resources.

According to Kenya News Agency, the week-long initiative commenced on Monday at the Kiambu National Polytechnic, drawing participants from national and county governments, the Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Red Cross, local administrators, and other partners. The planned activities include public sensitization campaigns, clean-up exercises, and tree planting efforts. A significant roadside tree-planting exercise is scheduled for October 9, in partnership with the Ministry of Roads and the Kenya National Highways Authority.

Kiambu Deputy County Commissioner Titus Macharia highlighted that clean-up activities have already started in parts of the county. He encouraged young people, government officials, and residents to actively educate communities about environmental conservation. Macharia noted that climate change has impacted agriculture and businesses, leading to human-wildlife conflicts as animals travel further in search of resources. He urged residents to plant and care for trees, emphasizing long-term benefits for future generations.

Kiambu County Forest Conservator Andrew Matindi stressed that Mazingira Week focuses not only on planting trees but also on the survival of the seedlings. He emphasized the importance of awareness in environmental efforts and noted that the tree-planting exercise on October 9 aims to create shaded pedestrian routes and improve the local environment.

Kiambu National Polytechnic Chief Principal Sammy K. Waititu expressed gratitude to the county administration for selecting the institution to host the launch. He mentioned the polytechnic’s initiatives in rainwater harvesting and waste segregation, supported by its Green Army, to maintain a clean campus. Waititu encouraged participants to use the week to learn and adopt environmentally friendly practices.

The event served as a platform for stakeholders to renew their commitment to environmental conservation and mobilize public participation in Mazingira Week’s activities.
