Kiambu Inmates Display Skills Acquired in Prison

Kiambu:Prison authorities in Kiambu County are advocating for the full reintegration of released inmates into society, highlighting the skills they have acquired during their incarceration to facilitate a positive and productive life post-release.

According to Kenya News Agency, Kiambu Main Prisons Superintendent Jane Mwaura emphasized the importance of the community accepting former convicts who have served their full terms. She noted that many inmates have developed skills that are beneficial for society. During the Correctional Services Week, inmates showcased various products made in prison to demonstrate the vocational skills acquired during their sentences.

The Correctional Services Week celebrations aim to foster stronger relations between correctional institutions and the public, promoting an understanding of inmates’ rehabilitation. Superintendent Mwaura explained that inmates receive vocational training, including carpentry, and earn certificates upon course completion. These skills are intended to help them earn an income, support their families, and contribute positively to society upon their release.

The welfare team at Kiambu Prison displayed carpentry products made by inmates, offering them for sale to the public. The showcased products underscore the practical skills inmates gain through rehabilitation and training, which can aid them in establishing livelihoods after leaving prison. Additionally, Kiambu Main Prison promotes agricultural activities, supporting inmates in farm work at a nursery where seedlings are raised for sale.

On a national level, the Correctional Service Week 2026, which runs from October 13 to October 15, was officially launched in Nairobi by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. He encouraged correctional institutions to adopt secure, integrated, and data-driven systems, leveraging technology to enhance operational efficiency and rehabilitation programs. The Deputy President urged the State Department for Correctional Services to align its digital initiatives with the National Digital Master Plan 2022-2032, the National E-Commerce Strategy 2023, and the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2025-2030.
