Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) intends to plant more than 8.5 million tree seedlings in the next five years in an attempt to upgrade food security and boost nutrition.
The initiative will be an income generation for the community in the region.
Elgeyo Marakwet County is among six counties that will be beneficiaries of the project as well as West Pokot, Baringo, Turkana, Samburu and Nakuru.
The initiative is a major boost as KVDA has established a mango factory at Tot in Marakwet East Sub-County.
KVDA Managing Director, Sammy Naporos, said the program will help increase mango production in the Rift Valley region, promote mango value addition and help in conservation through the greening program.
Naporos added that KVDA, under the mango value chain and program, has donated assorted mango seedlings to farmers in the Kerio region in line with the Authority’s target of increasing mango production in the region.
KVDA is aiming to donate more than 3,000 mango tree seedlings to Elgeyo Marakwet farmers by the end of the year.
By distributing the seedlings, the Authority aims at building a better livelihood for the farmers and their dependents and improving tree cover in the region.
