Kericho County to Certify Jua Kali Artisans for Skills Recognition

Kericho:Kericho County is launching a certification program for Jua Kali artisans to formally acknowledge skills gained through practical experience, aiming to enhance conditions for informal-sector businesses.

According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Dr. Eric Mutai announced the Certificate of Prior Learning program during the Kericho County Jua Kali CBO conference. The initiative targets experienced artisans lacking formal academic qualifications, ensuring their skills are formally recognized.

Governor Mutai highlighted the issue faced by many artisans who have accrued significant expertise over years yet lack the documentation to prove their abilities. Through the program, the county plans to offer a certificate of prior learning, helping artisans advance in their careers.

To support this initiative, the county will review its budgetary allocations for bursaries and scholarships to find resources for the certification process. The aim is to provide artisans with formal recognition of their skills and link them to broader opportunities.

In addition to certification, the county is considering setting up a dedicated working area for mechanics to alleviate congestion in Kericho town. This facility would include specialised garage sheds and amenities, providing a more organised environment for mechanics.

Governor Mutai also emphasized the importance of improving artisans’ competitiveness and ensuring they have access to necessary markets. The certification program is expected to bridge the gap between practical experience and formal qualifications.

Further plans for Kericho include modernising the town with pedestrian pathways, affordable housing units, and an Export Processing Centre to expand economic activity. Security improvements and a new hospital are also in the pipeline to enhance residents’ lives.

The proposed initiatives focus on recognising practical skills and creating suitable business environments, aiming to translate commitments into tangible benefits for Kericho’s artisans.
