Nairobi: Kenya’s Shujaa rugby team showcased their prowess by clinching third place in the opening leg of the HSBC SVNS 2 series, boasting four victories out of five matches.
According to Kenya News Agency, the tournament, dubbed ‘Valentine’s weekend’ and held at Nyayo National Stadium, witnessed the Shujaa team overcoming Canada 7s with a 29-12 victory, driven by the fervor of the home crowd. Electric winger Patrick Odongo contributed two tries, while Chrisant Ojwang, Festus Shiasi, and Nigel Amaitsa each added a try. Amaitsa’s conversion further solidified the dominant display.
Continuing their impressive form, Shujaa defeated Belgium 7s with a commanding 33-0 win. With a 26-0 lead at halftime, the team demonstrated power and precision. Samuel Asati, Chrisant Ojwang, Vincent Onyala, and Patrick Odongo all scored, culminating in Floyd Wabwire’s final try and conversion in the second half.
In a thrilling encounter against Germany 7s, Shujaa showcased resilience by securing a 15-10 victory in sudden-death extra time. After trailing 10-0 at halftime, Nygel Amaitsa and Patrick Odongo brought Kenya level. Festus Shiasi then sealed the dramatic win off a turnover by Kevin Wekesa.
Kenya’s performance placed them at the top of the men’s pool alongside the USA 7s, who also impressed with dominant victories. The USA’s strong showing included a 40-0 win over Belgium 7s and a 41-7 triumph against Canada 7s.
On Day 2, Kenya 7s defeated Uruguay 7s 17-7, demonstrating determination and skill. Despite a tough final round against the USA, where they lost 21-7, George Ooro’s try ignited the home crowd, and his leadership earned him the title of Player of the HSBC SVNS 2 Nairobi Series.
The Lionesses also made their mark, stunning Brazil 7s with a 15-12 comeback win. Despite setbacks against China 7s and South Africa, they showed resilience and determination. Their final match against Spain ended in a 14-5 defeat, concluding their campaign in fifth place.
Simon Odongo expressed pride in the Lionesses’ performance, emphasizing the lessons learned for future rounds. As the series progresses to Montevideo, Uruguay, and So Paulo, Brazil, both Shujaa and the Lionesses remain determined to achieve greater success.
With 12 points, Kenya’s Shujaa heads into the second leg in third place, while the Lionesses continue their journey, aiming to improve their standing in the fiercely competitive series.
