Ruiru:The Kenya Cubing Federation is advocating for the inclusion of cubing activities in school curricula to help students enhance their problem-solving skills and discipline. This initiative aligns with the Competency-Based Curriculum, which emphasizes hands-on learning.
According to Kenya News Agency, during the launch of the Kenya Cubing Federation’s Speedcubing School Championships at Zetech University, Wycliffe Sirengo, the federation’s president and Zetech University’s Manager for Student Experience and Outreach Marketing, encouraged students to practice cubing consistently. He highlighted the benefits of reducing screen time in favor of engaging in speedcubing, which could lead to opportunities to represent their schools and Kenya in international competitions.
Sirengo urged students to balance their academic and sports pursuits, emphasizing that education should remain a priority. He also mentioned the importance of obeying teachers and respecting parents while striving for excellence in both academics and sports.
At the event, students participated in speedcubing, a sport involving solving Rubik’s cubes and other puzzles quickly and accurately. The competition included various cube stages, showcasing the students’ skills and progress. Grace Wangari, the federation’s Secretary General, praised the students’ achievements over the past two months, noting their advancement from beginners to adept cubers.
Samuel Kamau, responsible for overseeing cubing in educational institutions, announced that the federation is collaborating with the Ministry of Education to integrate cubing into the curriculum. This initiative aims to nurture young talent and develop skills in mathematics, science, sport, and art.
The federation plans to extend cubing activities to the wider East African region, with upcoming competitions in Arusha, Tanzania, and potential participation in global events. Kamau encouraged students to improve their solving times and to share their skills with peers and family members, preparing for future international opportunities.
