KeNHA To Expand Bridge Connecting Nyandarua And Laikipia Counties

Nyahururu: The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is set to expand a bridge on River Ngarenaro near Nyahururu town, aiming to improve the safety of road users traveling between Nyandarua County and Laikipia County.

According to Kenya News Agency, KeNHA Board Chair Ms. Winfrida Ngumi emphasized the urgency of the project, highlighting that the current narrow bridge has become a notorious black spot, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge, initially constructed without a walkway, poses significant risks, especially for learners walking from Kibathi and Madaraka Estates to schools in Nyahururu town during rush hour traffic.

Ms. Ngumi revealed that the procurement process for the bridge expansion is already underway, with plans to have a contractor on site within the next three months. The project will include the construction of a footbridge on either side of the road to accommodate pedestrians and a designated space for non-motorized traffic.

The bridge’s hazardous conditions have sparked protests from activists following accidents. Recently, local residents took matters into their own hands by constructing a temporary wooden footpath after a pedestrian was struck by a speeding vehicle. Ms. Ngumi addressed the media after a public road safety sensitization forum in Ol-Kalou Constituency, emphasizing the importance of such forums, which are being conducted nationwide.

During the forum at Muiri Primary School ground, Ms. Ngumi reiterated KeNHA’s commitment to road safety programs, aligning with the Road Safety Policy launched by the president in 2024. She stressed the importance of fast-tracking road maintenance and improving bridges across the country. Ms. Ngumi also urged citizens to protect road infrastructure, noting the rampant vandalism of road signs.
