Kiambu:The government is intensifying its investment in modern markets in Kiambu County, with the construction of the Kangangi Fresh Produce Market in Kiambu Town reaching 30 percent completion. This Sh267 million project is part of a nationwide initiative to develop approximately 600 markets, aiming to enhance trading infrastructure, support small-scale traders, and generate employment opportunities.
According to Kenya News Agency, Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki emphasized that the market construction program is a testament to the government’s commitment to expanding economic opportunities and ensuring development reaches all communities across the country. In Kiambu County, construction has started on 29 out of the 31 planned markets, with the remaining two expected to commence soon.
Kabete Constituency will benefit from six modern markets, including Utheru, Kahuho, Gikoni, Mungunga, Gingero, and Wagige, with significant financial allocations for each. The largest project, Wagige, has received a budget of Sh368 million. Prof. Kindiki highlighted that these market projects are part of a broader investment initiative that includes affordable housing and student accommodation.
The Deputy President reported that the nationwide Housing Fund projects, encompassing markets, housing units, and student accommodations, are valued at approximately Sh800 billion. These projects have created employment for an estimated 1.1 million previously unemployed individuals, contributing significantly to the country’s economic development.
The construction of modern markets is intended to enhance infrastructure for traders, supporting local businesses and livelihoods. Prof. Kindiki reiterated the government’s commitment to fulfilling its development promises across sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, roads, and electricity, stressing the importance of equitable distribution of development projects throughout the country.
In addition to market construction, Kiambu is witnessing infrastructure investments like road building and affordable housing developments, aimed at improving service access and stimulating local economic activity. The Kangangi Fresh Produce Market is set to be completed by February 2027, offering traders modern facilities and enhancing infrastructure for fresh produce vendors in Kiambu Town.
