Kajiado:Health authorities in Kajiado North Sub-County are intensifying surveillance and preparedness measures to prevent outbreaks of waterborne and other diseases during the anticipated El Ni±o rains. The Sub-County Chief Health Officer, Timothy Mutiso, emphasized the risk of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and malaria, which could rise during heavy rainfall and flooding.
According to Kenya News Agency, Mutiso identified areas like Ongata Rongai and Mathare in Ngong as particularly vulnerable due to poor sanitation, limited access to clean water, and the dense population in informal settlements. He stated that the department is prepared and vigilant for any outbreaks, especially cholera, diarrhea, and malaria.
Community Health Promoters are being utilized to educate residents on disease prevention. The health department is collaborating with other county departments to improve drainage systems and reduce flooding and contamination risks. Residents are urged to boil drinking water and maintain proper sanitation, especially in areas where sewage and stormwater might contaminate water sources.
Ngong and Ongata Rongai Sub-County Hospitals have identified facilities for use as isolation units if a disease outbreak occurs. The health department is also conducting weekly disease surveillance to detect and respond to unusual cases early using the One Health approach, which integrates different departments to strengthen preparedness.
Sophia Osego, a resident of Embulbul, expressed concern about health risks from flooding in informal settlements, highlighting the sewage and garbage water issues faced by residents. She urged for increased public awareness about preventing waterborne diseases, especially for vulnerable children in the area.
Ngong Community Health Volunteer Mary Metkei mentioned that health workers are conducting water sampling, health education, and drainage monitoring to identify potential contamination sources. However, she noted a shortage of water-sampling containers, posing a challenge to regular water quality testing.
Kajiado County Director of Meteorological Services, Benson Lubanga Ogada, advised residents and stakeholders to take necessary precautions and prepare adequately for the expected rains. Early this month, the Ministry of Health initiated an El Ni±o preparedness plan in 18 high-risk counties to mitigate the potential impact of heavy rains on public health. The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an El Ni±o warning for October to December, with the possibility of extending until February 2027.
