Kilifi: The chairperson of Kenya Roads Board, Aisha Jumwa, has unveiled a strategic plan to ensure that women secure at least 30 percent of government road tenders. This initiative aims to address the current male dominance in the road construction sector.

According to Kenya News Agency, Jumwa observed that despite the qualifications of female engineers, road construction tenders are predominantly awarded to men due to discrimination. Speaking at Sandoki sports grounds during the International Women’s Day celebration in Sabaki, Kilifi County, Jumwa, who is also a former Gender Cabinet Secretary, emphasized the need for gender balance in the sector.

Jumwa highlighted that the law mandates 30 percent of government contracts be allocated to women and stressed its application to road construction. She noted that women face challenges, including being sidelined and sometimes facing sexual harassment while bidding for contracts.

She also acknowledged progress in women’s empowerment and efforts to combat female genital mutilation during her tenure as Gender and Affirmative Action Cabinet Secretary. Jumwa praised President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Amolo Odinga for setting aside differences to address women’s issues.

Jumwa commended President Ruto for allocating Sh100 million to combat femicide, expressing gratitude for his commitment to women’s safety. She called for the end of workplace sexual harassment and exploitation of women seeking employment opportunities.

The event gathered women leaders, activists, and community members, all united in advancing gender equality in Kenya.
