Nairobi: Jomvu Member of Parliament Badi Twalib has called for stronger cooperation between the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to expand trade and strengthen Kenya’s position as a logistics hub for Central Africa. Twalib emphasized that improved relations between Kenya and the DRC, along with significant investments in transport infrastructure, have enhanced cross-border trade and created opportunities for businesses in the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, Twalib made these remarks while hosting DRC Consul General Kambale Mukokoma at his offices in Jomvu, Mombasa. They discussed strategies to deepen economic ties between the two countries. Twalib highlighted the importance of infrastructure development, particularly the road network from the Port of Mombasa through Jomvu and Mariakani, in improving turnaround times for drivers and traders.
Twalib stated that the government’s investment in roads and port infrastructure had positioned the Port of Mombasa as a crucial gateway for goods destined for Central Africa. Despite the insecurity in Goma, efforts are underway to establish KPA offices in the region to facilitate trade and strengthen the authority’s presence in the DRC. He urged the governments of both countries to expedite measures to overcome challenges hindering the establishment of these offices.
Twalib also pointed out that the expansion of the Port of Mombasa, the commissioning of the Shimoni Port, and the full operationalization of the Port of Lamu have positioned Kenya as a key shipping and logistics hub on the continent. He encouraged the DRC to utilize Kenyan ports more extensively to facilitate trade and capitalize on the growing economic opportunities resulting from the cooperation between the two nations.
Consul General Mukokoma acknowledged Kenya’s progress towards becoming a continental leader in logistics and ease of doing business. He noted that the DRC has substantial business interests in Kenya, particularly through the Port of Mombasa, which is benefiting from the enhanced cooperation between the two countries. Mukokoma also praised Kenya for its support of DRC citizens and business people residing in the country, which has strengthened bilateral relations and promoted the ideals of the East African Community (EAC).
The courtesy visit by Mukokoma to Twalib included offering condolences following the death of Twalib’s personal secretary, Beatrice Wache Mwazighe.
