Kisumu: Joska Grannies FC from Machakos County emerged victorious in the ‘Kick for Health’ Grannies Tournament held at the Molo Stadium, defeating Tugumoi Grannies FC from Elgeyo Marakwet with an impressive 7-0 scoreline.

According to Kenya News Agency, the tournament aimed to tackle health issues such as hypertension, blood sugar, arteritis, and depression among the elderly, drawing participation from 35 teams across 15 counties. The initiative has been praised by participants for its role in promoting health and social interaction, allowing elderly women to rediscover their youthful vigor.

Joska FC Captain Lucy Kathuria, speaking at the award ceremony, highlighted the positive impact of the tournament on women’s health and empowerment. She noted that the event has helped women regain fitness and has served as a platform for activities like table banking and savings. ‘Many women who were left hopeless and struggling with ailments are now eagerly participating in this sport as if they are in their prime,’ Kathuria remarked.

Her sentiments were echoed by Martha Waema and Nancy Geumi of Kapyanga Grannies FC from Molo, who emphasized the tournament’s role in fostering business networks and promoting physical fitness. Geumi mentioned that the event has helped grannies manage depression by reducing isolation.

Molo Member of Parliament, Kuria Kimani, attended the event as the Chief Guest, praising the initiative as a significant step toward addressing societal health issues. He noted that the sport allows participants to save on medical expenses and invest those funds elsewhere. Kimani also used the platform to advise the youth against drug use and divisive politics, urging them to consider sports as a transformative industry.

Irine Terreni, captain of Daraje Grannies FC from Baringo County, mentioned that their team is using the tournament to raise awareness against banditry, which has left many in their community homeless. Daraje FC secured a 1-0 victory over Nakuru Grannies, while Kauyanga Super Grannies from Molo triumphed against Oleleshwoi Grannies from Narok County with the same score.

Teams from various regions, including Nairobi, Kakamega, Eldoret, Nandi, and Bomet, also participated in this successful event.
