Kisumu: Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) has initiated a neurosurgical camp aimed at providing free brain and spine operations to 73 patients over the next 10 days. The camp, part of the Kisumu Neuroscience Initiative, began on Monday and will continue until December 3.
According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative is a collaborative effort between German and Kenyan medical specialists. On the first day of the camp, nine complex surgeries were successfully completed, laying the groundwork for the intensive medical intervention. The German team is led by neurosurgeon Dr. Tim Ogutu and includes Dr. Judith Jacob, Dr. Anita Schug, Dr. Rosemary Ngoti, Dr. Gerald Otieno Olola, and Dr. Handjou Nganou. They are working alongside JOOTRH surgeons Dr. Lee Ogutha, Dr. William Owiti, and Dr. Walter Adero.
In addition to the surgical team, specialized German nurses and paramedics, including Miriam Klein, Lena Hoch, Dennis Hoefler, Simon Letsch, Eva Lehmann, and Florian Kessler, have joined the mission. The team also includes JOOTRH physiotherapist Maureen Akumu, German physiotherapist Andrea Meixner, and Nevro Pain Therapy representative Eldar Hubolov.
The camp offers a range of surgeries such as spine decompressions, cervical fusions, lumbar laminectomies, spinal fixations, and brain tumor removals. Patients of all ages are being treated, from a 14-year-old girl to elderly adults, highlighting the significant demand for neurosurgical care in public health facilities. In private hospitals, these procedures can cost between Sh500,000 and Sh900,000, making them inaccessible for many.
Patients covered by the Social Health Authority (SHA) are receiving the surgeries and post-operative care free of charge, alleviating financial strain and improving access to specialized healthcare. This quarterly camp is anticipated to continue through early December, providing equitable access to critical and costly surgical procedures.
