Innovative Water Infrastructure Key to Ending Nairobi’s Flood Challenges

Nairobi: The CEO of the National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority (NWHSA), Eng. Julius Mugun, has emphasized the potential of innovative water harvesting and storage solutions in addressing the persistent flooding issues in Nairobi and other regions of Kenya. Speaking at a three-day staff retreat in Naivasha, Mugun highlighted that Kenya possesses the necessary expertise to develop infrastructure that can mitigate the impact of devastating floods, provided that institutions embrace innovation and collaborate effectively.

According to Kenya News Agency, Eng. Mugun stressed the importance of proper planning and investment in water infrastructure to significantly reduce the recurring floods that affect Nairobi and other urban areas. He urged stakeholders to work collectively, make necessary sacrifices, and serve the government and the nation diligently to combat the flood menace. Recent years have seen destructive floods displace families, damage roads, and destroy property in Kenya, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable water management solutions.

In his address, the CEO encouraged NWHSA staff to adopt teamwork and innovation in developing projects that not only improve access to water but also bolster the country’s resilience to climate change. He emphasized that the Authority’s role in identifying water sources for harvesting and storage is central to national efforts to tackle both water scarcity and flooding.

NWHSA Board Chairperson Dr. Jane Mwikali echoed these sentiments, calling on employees to remain united and focused on implementing government programs aimed at enhancing the lives of Kenyans. She highlighted that professionalism and teamwork are crucial for the Authority to expand water harvesting and storage infrastructure and strengthen the country’s resilience to climate change. The Authority is tasked with the development and management of water harvesting and storage infrastructure to ensure water security and support sustainable socio-economic development throughout Kenya.
