Ingonga Asserts No Political Interference in ODPP Operations

Migori: The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has declared that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) operates without political interference. He emphasized that the Constitution clearly mandates that the ODPP does not receive any direction from politicians.

According to Kenya News Agency, Ingonga made these remarks during a courtesy visit to Migori County Commissioner Kisilu Mutua. He highlighted that political interference is not a concern in prosecution matters, stressing that all citizens are accountable to the law for their actions. The Constitution establishes the ODPP to handle criminal prosecutions, ensure accountability, and promote human rights.

Ingonga’s visit also included a meeting with Migori governor Ochillo Ayako and judiciary officials in Migori, aiming to raise awareness and understanding of the justice system. He engaged with judiciary members, county government officials, police, and local administrators to enhance service delivery and strengthen the relationship between the ODPP and the communities it serves.

Addressing the issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Ingonga noted its prevalence in Kuria sub-counties, particularly during the December holiday season. He affirmed that the ODPP would handle FGM cases decisively when presented to them, recognizing it as a matter of national concern.

The ODPP is conducting a tour of the Nyanza region to engage with stakeholders and evaluate the local justice system’s progress. Ingonga has visited counties including Siaya, Kisumu, Nyamira, Kisii, and Migori, expressing satisfaction with the achievements of his office. ‘This is our fifth county, and we have not encountered any major issues concerning the stakeholders and the office of the ODPP. Our goal is to connect with the Migori people and understand how they are working and identify areas where we can improve,’ he concluded.
