Nairobi: The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has confidently stated that his office is free from political interference. Ingonga made these remarks during a courtesy visit to Migori County Commissioner Kisilu Mutua. He emphasized that the Constitution of Kenya clearly mandates that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) operates independently, without any direction or influence from political figures.

According to Kenya News Agency, Ingonga elaborated that political interference is not a factor in prosecution processes, reiterating that all citizens are equally accountable under the law. The ODPP, as established by the Constitution, is tasked with initiating and conducting criminal prosecutions while ensuring accountability and upholding human rights.

During his visit, Ingonga met with Migori governor Ochillo Ayako and other local judiciary officials to foster awareness and understanding of the justice system. The meetings also included discussions with officials from the judiciary, county government, police, and local administrators. The aim of these engagements is to enhance service delivery and strengthen the relationship between the ODPP and the communities, as well as to address any challenges faced by the office.

Ingonga also touched on the issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a prevalent practice in the Kuria sub-counties, particularly during the December holiday season. He stated that FGM is a national concern and assured that his office is committed to addressing FGM cases with seriousness when reported.

The ODPP’s ongoing tour of the Nyanza region is part of an effort to engage with stakeholders and evaluate the progress of the local justice system. With visits to Siaya, Kisumu, Nyamira, Kisii, and now Migori, Ingonga has expressed satisfaction with the progress observed so far. “This is our fifth county, and we have not encountered any major issues concerning the stakeholders and the office of the ODPP. Our goal is to connect with the Migori people and understand how they are working and identify areas where we can improve,” he concluded.
