Busia: Police in Busia, working in collaboration with judiciary staff, have destroyed a consignment of bhang and heroin valued at over Sh21 million. The narcotics are part of the exhibits presented in court that were intercepted at Suo roadblock along Kisumu-Busia Road in 2023.
According to Kenya News Agency, Busia County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) Wesley Langat, speaking to the Press before destroying the exhibits at Alupe Sub County hospital incinerator in Teso South Sub County on Wednesday, stated that the drugs were part of a consignment destined for Mombasa from the neighbouring country of Uganda in 2023. Langat mentioned that two Kenyan suspects were arrested in connection with the incidents and emphasized that security officers are on high alert to crack down on drug peddlers.
Busia Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti confirmed that the two cases were processed and concluded in court, resulting in the convicts being sentenced to 50 years imprisonment. Nyaloti noted that the convicts were found in possession of 12.5 kilograms of heroin worth Sh11.8 million alongside bhang worth more than Sh10 million.
Busia County representative of the Director of Public Prosecution, Loice Murunga, issued a warning to local residents against engaging in drug trafficking, highlighting that the offenses attract hefty fines.
