Igembe East Residents Urge Prompt Completion of Koree Road

Nairobi:Igembe East: Residents of Igembe East Ward in Igembe Central Constituency have urged the swift completion of Koree Road, expressing concerns that its current poor condition could impede movement and access to essential services, especially with the anticipated heavy rains associated with El Ni±o.

According to Kenya News Agency, the delayed construction has left the road in a deteriorated state, with fears that some sections may become impassable during heavy rainfall. Koree Road, vital for residents, traders, and boda boda operators, connects Kiengu, Nthambiro, and Matiandui, among other areas in Igembe East.

Residents had anticipated the road’s completion after area Member of Parliament Dan Kiili introduced a contractor to the site. However, they are worried about the slow progress. Dr. Martin Kimathi, a local resident, emphasized the community’s hope for completion before the long rains and urged residents in flood-prone areas to prepare for potential impacts.

Concerns were also raised about large stones left near the road and homes during construction, which have affected accessibility. Kienfu Baikoli, a resident with a disability, and Kanjira Susan, who faces access issues for her motorcycle, highlighted the difficulties these stones cause.

The road’s poor state has led to increased transportation costs, with Maina Kinyua from Nthambiro noting that travel expenses between Nthambiro and Kiengu have more than doubled. Dickson Mugambi, chairman of Igembe East boda boda operators, reported additional expenses for riders due to frequent breakdowns attributed to the road conditions. He also mentioned concerns about inadequate drainage along Kiengu and Kaurine roads, potentially complicating navigation during heavy rains.

Construction has also disrupted water infrastructure in some areas, as Deric Kadaudi noted, forcing households along the PCEA-Kiengu road to purchase water. Residents have called on the contractor and government agencies to expedite the road works and improve drainage systems before the rains intensify. They also seek attention from county and national governments to address access issues and water infrastructure concerns along the road.

Felix Mwirigi expressed the community’s desire for progress on road projects promised by the area MP, emphasizing the need for greater focus on development initiatives in the region. Completing Koree Road, residents argue, would enhance connectivity and reduce transport and motorcycle maintenance costs in Igembe East.
