Nairobi: The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the formal exit of its Chief Executive Officer and Commission Secretary, Mr. Marjan Hussein Marjan. The Commission made this announcement after reaching an agreement to terminate Marjan’s services by mutual consent.
According to Kenya News Agency, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon explained that Marjan’s departure marks the beginning of the process to recruit a new CEO and Secretary to the Commission. Ethekon stated that an interim replacement would be announced soon, who will take over as Acting CEO/CS. This move aligns with the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a seamless transition to maintain momentum in fulfilling its constitutional mandates, including conducting elections and delimiting boundaries.
Ethekon emphasized the importance of embarking on critical reforms within the Secretariat as Marjan exits. He assured Kenyans that any changes would be made to enhance institutional preparedness, strengthen internal accountability, and ensure leadership continuity. The IEBC Secretariat plays a vital role in electoral management and related matters, and the Commission intends for it to reflect a high level of readiness, passion, and commitment to delivering credible, free, and fair elections in Kenya.
The Commission expressed appreciation for Marjan’s work, highlighting his commitment and leadership since his appointment in March 2022. Ethekon thanked Marjan for steering the Secretariat during a challenging period when the Commissioners were absent until the current Commission was fully constituted on July 11, 2025. The Commission wished Marjan well in his future endeavors.
Ethekon reassured Kenyans and stakeholders that changes within the Secretariat and management arrangements would not disrupt ongoing activities, including by-elections and preparations for the 2027 General Elections. Instead, the changes are intended to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, transparency, and accountability of the Secretariat in service delivery to the people of Kenya.
