Hassan Omar Summoned by IEBC Over Alleged Statements on Deceased Voters

Nairobi:The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has summoned Hassan Omar to appear before its Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee on 21st October 2026 at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi. The summons follows allegations concerning statements made by the former senator at a public rally in Mombasa County on 11th September 2026, which reportedly involved voting by deceased individuals.

According to Kenya News Agency, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon stated that the matter was brought to the Commission’s attention and is being reviewed under the Electoral Code of Conduct as outlined in the Second Schedule of the Elections Act, 2011. Ethekon emphasized the Commission’s role in upholding the integrity of Kenya’s electoral processes.

The Chairperson highlighted that the Commission is responsible for ensuring all participants adhere to the Constitution, the Elections Act, and the Electoral Code of Conduct. This framework allows for the reporting, investigation, and enforcement of breaches. The summons provides Omar an opportunity to address the allegations, respecting his rights to fair administrative action and to be heard.

Ethekon assured that the Committee’s decision will be based on the materials and representations presented during the proceedings. He urged the former senator to comply with the summons and cooperate fully. The Commission remains committed to taking independent and impartial actions on credible complaints.

As the 2027 General Election approaches, the IEBC calls on political leaders, candidates, and supporters to act with restraint, accountability, and respect in their public statements and actions. The Commission aims to foster an electoral environment based on peace, tolerance, and democratic participation, and will release further details after the proceedings conclude.
