Nyandarua Governor Moses Badilisha has urged the government to consider putting up a sports academy in Nyandarua County to nurture budding talent amongst the youth.
Badilisha, who this morning hosted officials from the National governments Ministry of Sports and Sports Kenya (SK) noted that the high altitude county was conducive for sports, urging SK to front the idea.
“Nyandarua has an adequate land bank for construction of such a facility, and is a reservoir of talent which can be tapped for youth development. I assure you of my support in any project that seeks to positively impact our youth,” he noted.
The county that prides in re-known athletes such as World Cross Country Silver Medalist, Bidan Karoki and 10, 000M silver medalist in the recent World Championships in Oregon- USA Stanley Waithaka, train at Nyahururu Stadium in Lakipia County for lack of a facility in Ol Kalou.
Construction of Ol Kalou Stadium that was being upgraded to national standards has for 10 years stalled, with governor Badilisha promising to deliver on it.
Sports Kenya Chairman, Charles Waithaka, said that his organisation has designed a framework of engagement which will see targeted support in sporting infrastructure and activities in the county.
“We will work jointly with your County team to develop a comprehensive report on status of sporting projects and facilities that require our support in Nyandarua. This report will form part of the briefing to the incoming cabinet members.
“I’m happy to note that we have covered some considerable groundwork and Nyandarua is one of our target counties,” Mr Waithaka noted.
The county boasts of a high altitude of up to 2,800 metres above sea level around Shamata Township that has been touted as conducive for long distance runners training.
